Pharmacists

Pharmacists play a pivotal role in the prevention and reduction of drug overdoses as well as expanding access to evidence-based treatment. The MACS team of addiction medicine experts, including pharmacists, are here to support Maryland pharmacists and their teams in addressing the needs of patients with substance use disorders and chronic pain management. Learn how in this brief video:

All MACS services are free. Maryland pharmacists and pharmacy staff can call the MACS warmline with questions related to substance use and chronic pain management such as:

  • Addressing buprenorphine ordering, dispensing or patient-related issues
  • Selecting alternative buprenorphine manufacturers
  • Understanding evidence-based dosing
  • Discussing therapeutic recommendations about product alternatives based on medication indication and available products
  • Prescribing pain medications for patients with history of substance use disorders
  • Providing harm reduction services such as naloxone

Utilizing MACS can also provide pharmacists and their teams training on substance use disorders, best practices, case evaluations, and professional support to breakdown stigma and provide compassionate access to life-saving treatment. We also offer ECHO clinics, real-time, online learning sessions with expert specialist teams.
